Insurance for Fishing Boats used for Pleasure
As long as no money changes hands your fishing boat can be insured for private and pleasure use only with no commercial insurance required.
If you fish for sea fish without a licence and sell your catch, you may be prosecuted and have to pay a fine of up to £50,000 for each offence and forfeit your fish and equipment.
The licence sets out where you can fish, what you are not allowed to fish and the limits for the stocks you are allowed to fish and land. There are different types of licence, depending on the length of your fishing boat, the species fished and the waters where you will fishing.
Your fishing boat will need to be both registered and licenced and it is also a condition of your commercial fishing insurance policy.
There are a few exceptions, but generally you need a licence to be able to sell any of your catch. This is the case even if you are just selling what you don't want for yourself to friends or a fishmonger.
